About Us

In 1925, Max Alfery made the journey from Germany to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to find a better way of life. He married another German immigrant by the name of Theresa Dorfner in 1933. In 1946 Max Alfery and Frank Dorfner began selling appliances and home furnishings under the name of A & D Furniture on Brownsville Road in Carrick. As the business grew and the children began to enter the business, Max decided to venture on his own with his two sons Max Jr. and Joe and Colonial Gallery, Inc. was formed. After purchasing and remodeling a former tavern owned by the Artman family, Colonial Gallery was opened for buisiness in November of 1961 on Route 51 in Baldwin-Whitehall near Pittsburgh, PA. In 1965 a large three story addition was built on to the old house. Thus began the legacy of Max’s dreams. Sadly, in the 1980's Max suffered several strokes which left him unable to continue his roll as president of the company and Max Jr. became the President. In 2001 an opportunity arose to purchase the old Gordon’s Furniture store on Route 19 in McMurray. Our second location opened in September of 2001. With the addition of the second location came an opportunity to transform the company to be competitive in today’s marketplace. In 2005, Max Jr. and his daughter Karen Sauers, who has been with the company since 1990, acquired sole ownership of the company. Shortly after, the decision was made to transform the original Route 51 Whitehall showroom into an Outlet Center and renovate the Route 19 McMurray showroom to become our flagship location. The name was updated to Colonial Modern in 2006 to better represent what we have now become. See for yourself, you won’t believe what we’ve become!
