Colonial Modern Furniture, or too many of you know us as Colonial Gallery, has been in the Pittsburgh area for over 40 years. The company was started by my grandfather, Max Alfery Sr., in 1961 and has always been a family owned and operated company. Our goal is not to simply sell furniture but instead to help our customers design the perfect space for their home.
We carry traditional to modern furniture and accessory styles; the majority of the furniture we sell can be completely customized by applying your choice of fabric and wood finishes, creating the exact style you are looking for. Our designers have studied interior design professionally and are talented in customizing traditional, transitional or contemporary styles for you. The full interior design services do not stop there; clients can also request to have a designer meet in your home to put together a complete room design covering, accessories, paint colors, window treatments and furniture placement.
When your furniture is delivered it includes set up and placement. Our white glove delivery service will assemble the furniture you bought and place it in your room. After delivery sale service is always available to you on every purchase you make with us.

1925 Max Alfery Sr. made the journey from Germany to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to find a better way of life. He married another German immigrant by the name of Theresa Dorfner in 1933.
1946 Max Alfery Sr. and Frank Dorfner began selling appliances and home furnishings under the name of A & D Furniture on Brownsville Road in Carrick. As the business grew and the children began to enter the business, Max decided to venture on his own with his two sons Max Jr. and Joe and Colonial Gallery, Inc. was formed.
1961 Colonial Gallery was opened for business in November of 1961 on Route 51 in Baldwin-Whitehall near Pittsburgh, PA after purchasing and remodeling a former tavern owned by the Artman family,
1965 The legacy of my grandfather dreams began when the original premise was expanded to three story addition.
1980's Sadly, Max Alfery Sr. suffered several strokes which left him unable to continue his roll as president of the company and Max Jr. became the new President.
2001 An opportunity arose to purchase the old Gordon’s Furniture store on Route 19 in McMurray. Our second location opened in September of 2001. With the addition of the second location came an opportunity to transform the company to be competitive in today’s marketplace.
2005 Max Jr. and his daughter Karen Sauers, who has been with the company since 1990, acquired sole ownership of the company. Shortly after, the decision was made to transform the original Route 51 Whitehall showroom into an Outlet Center and renovate the Route 19 McMurray showroom to become our flagship location.
2006 The company name was updated to Colonial Modern Furniture to accurately represent what we have now become.
Stop in at our Outlet or Flagship design location to see for yourself, you won’t believe what we’ve become!
